You might want to sit down for this. Writer/director Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash follow-up, a contemporary L.A. romance titled La La Land is circling a pair of swoon-worthy marquee players, as Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling are reportedly eyeing the leading roles. Oh, did I mention it’s a musical? It’s a musical.
The duo have some history, obviously; they co-starred (and inarguably stole) the 2011 rom-com Crazy Stupid Love, and steamed up the screen in 2013’s Gangster Squad (which actually isn’t terrible, if for no other reason than their considerable chemistry). They’re unabashedly great together in both films, and the musical angle makes this one even juicier; while there’s not much in the way of evidence that Gosling can sing (though this is pretty charming), Stone just finished an acclaimed turn as Sally Bowles in the recent Broadway revival of Cabaret.
The deal hasn’t been signed yet, so anything can happen, but we’re gonna ignore those formalities and go camp out for our tickets now.
